Lochinver

On Sutherland’s west coast, just 1½ hours west of Dornoch, Lochinver lies in a fold of the hills around a sheltered harbour.

Close by is Achmelvich beach, a sheltered silver bay with safe bathing that’s become famous for its silver sands and crystal clear water. Look out for basking sharks, dolphins, porpoises and even the occasional minke whale.

As you drive west you’ll enjoy stunning views of Sutherland’s mountains, Col Mor, Suilven and Canisp.

Tongue and North Sutherland

Drive west past Loch Shin then north through Altnaharra to the north coast and the green haven of Tongue, a small, attractive village with good places to eat. From there, drive west along the coast around Loch Eriboll to Durness or head east to Melvich and then home via historic Strathnaver to Helmsdale and south to Dornoch.
