The Castle of Mey
Open: Seasonal
The Queen Mother acquired the Castle of Mey, the most northerly inhabited castle on the British mainland, in 1952. She renovated and restored it and created the beautiful gardens you see today. For almost half a century she spent many happy summers there and shorter visits at other times of the year.
The castle is situated on the north coast of Caithness, in the parish of Canisbay, about 15 miles east of Thurso and six miles west of John O’Groats. It stands on rising ground about 400 yards from the seashore, overlooking the Pentland Firth and the Orkney Islands. It is thought that a fortified granary occupied the site originally.
Today you can visit the Castle, grounds and walled garden as well as the visitors’ centre with tearoom and giftshop. Additionally, children and adults alike will enjoy visiting Alice the Donkey and friends at the animal centre.
Experience this stunning castle for yourself this summer (1st May – 30th September). It is an easy and breathtaking 1 hour 50 minute drive from Dornoch, straight up the A9 (North Coast 500 Route).
