From Dornoch travel west along Castle Street heading out of town and turn left at the West Church Hall onto Sutherland Road (signposted Cuthill). After 2 miles (3.2 km) turn right at the Forestry and Land Scotland signs and follow the forest track up to the car park. From the south, cross the Dornoch Bridge on the A9 and after about a mile, turn right onto the single-track road signposted Cuthill. 1½ miles (2.4 km) further on you’ll see the forestry signs on your left.

The full walk is a figure of eight path totalling just over two miles, with the choice to follow the first loop only for a shorter walk of one mile if you wish.

If you have children with you, there is fun a natural play area behind the car park, with tree shelters, tunnels and a fort, plus there’s a picnic table at the car park to enjoy a spot of post-exploring lunch.

There are 25 Iron Age hut circles hidden in the woods – check out the interpretation board to see how people lived in those times.

For the sporty, there’s a permanent intermediate level orienteering course through these open woodlands – contact FLS for a map. Horse riders are also welcome.
